LASIK
Calgary, Alberta
Who is a good LASIK candidate?
Like PRK, LASIK is a surgical procedure that reshapes your cornea, giving most patients freedom from glasses and/or contact lenses. Patients over the age of 44 may still need to wear glasses for close work such as reading and sewing or can choose monovision correction for presbyopia.
Basic qualifications
There are some basic requirements that all refractive surgery candidates should meet including:
- Eyes should be fully developed (typically 18 years old or older)
- You should have stable vision for at least one year prior to surgery
- You understand the risks involved with LASIK surgery and have realistic expectations
Refractive surgery is not appropriate if you are pregnant or nursing. Hormonal changes can change refractive error, minimizing or reversing the effectiveness of the surgery. Also, if you have a family history of keratoconus, you may not be a good candidate for corneal refractive surgery.
LASIK candidates
Good candidates for LASIK have healthy eyes and have one or more of the following refractive errors:
- Myopia up to -12 diopters
- Hyperopia up to +6 diopters
- Astigmatism up to 4 diopters
Because LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap, it is not appropriate for everyone. You may want to consider PRK as an alternative if you are not well suited for LASIK due to:
- Thin corneas
- Certain eye conditions
- Lifestyle or occupation that poses risk to corneal flap
