Complimentary PRK Evaluation with Surgeon

Calgary, Alberta

LASIK is the popular procedure right now, because, when successful, it produces quick results. However, PRK is often a safer option, allowing patients who are not good candidates for LASIK to be free from corrective lenses. Some patients who are candidates for LASIK may prefer PRK due to lifestyle or occupational factors. At Western Laser Eye Associates in Calgary, Alberta, we are committed to achieving the best results possible. Dr. Anderson Penno personally performs a full evaluation of every patient for LASIK/PRK, free of charge.

Preparing for your evaluation

If you normally wear contacts you will need to leave them out for a while before your evaluation so your corneas will be in their natural shape.

Soft contacts - 48 hours

Hard contacts - two weeks

Your evaluation will last about one hour. Because the exam involves dilation, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home, and you should bring sunglasses to wear after your exam.

The exam

An important part of your evaluation is a full eye exam including:

  • Dilation
  • Mapping
  • Analysis of corneal thickness

Dr. Anderson Penno will check your:

  • Corneas
  • Lenses
  • Retinas
  • Optic nerves
  • Tear film
  • Pupil size
  • Eye dominance

Dilation is necessary, not only because it allows her to see inside of your eye but because it relaxes the lens of your eye for a more accurate assessment of your visual acuity.

Discussing your concerns

During your evaluation, Dr. Anderson Penno will go over your medical history and discuss any concerns you may have about your eyes and your vision. After your exam she will let you know if you have any eye conditions or medical conditions that could affect your surgery.

Dr. Anderson Penno has been a practicing ophthalmologist and laser eye surgeon for ten years. She can care for most eye issues and will refer you to a specialist for any conditions or issues that she does not treat.

Recommending options

PRK is a safer option for patients who are not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas, eye conditions, or lifestyle concerns. However, PRK dose have a longer recovery period. Most people will return to work and other usual activities at about one week after PRK surgery. There is long-term healing that takes place over several months that will sharpen and stabilize the vision. During that time, eye drops may be recommended to assist in healing. If you need fast results, and are eligible, Dr. Anderson Penno may recommend LASIK as an alternative to PRK.
