About LASIK

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser refractive eye surgery used to correct nearsightedness (myopia) farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. At Western Laser Eye Associates, Dr. Anderson Penno and staff will evaluate your visual needs to determine which refractive eye surgery is best for you.

Some patients can achieve better than 20/20 vision! Improved vision can open up job opportunities that were not previously available to you including jobs that require driving, emergency services or flying.

How it works

Refractive error is often caused by a cornea that is too steep, too flat, or has a shape that is not a perfect sphere. The cornea focuses the light on your retina. When it is not a perfect sphere, it cannot focus the light properly, and you do not see clearly.

In LASIK surgery, the sculpting is performed on the inside of your cornea.

A speculum is used to hold the eyelids open

  • A thin flap is cut in your cornea using a suction ring and microkeratome
  • The laser vaporizes precise areas of the corneal tissue under the flap, reshaping your cornea
  • The flap is put back into place

PRK is a similar procedure that sculpts the outside of your cornea eliminating the need to make a flap.

Custom ablation

Wavefront technology allows Dr. Anderson Penno to perform very precise corrections in your cornea with a treatment that is individualized to your cornea, giving you the best possible vision, even with high-level aberrations. Custom ablation can be done with PRK or LASIK.

Monovision

Presbyopia develops as we age and is the reason you may need reading glasses or bifocals. Monovision involves correcting one eye for best vision up close and correcting the other eye for distance vision. Most people start to encounter presbyopia at the age of 40-45. They begin to need reading glasses or bifocals for close vision. With monovision, the dominant eye (the eye you would use to focus a camera) is focused for distance vision, and the non-dominant eye is focused for near to intermediate vision. This can be done with contact lenses, refractive surgery, or intraocular lenses.

Is LASIK right for me?

If your eyes are in good overall health and you are ready for your best possible vision without the need for corrective lenses, LASIK surgery just may be the right solution for you. If you are not a good candidate for LASIK, you may benefit from PRK.

Even people with certain eye conditions can have refractive surgery. Dr. Anderson Penno will conduct a thorough examination of your eyes during your LASIK/PRK evaluation to determine if LASIK is the right solution for you.
